The Prize is Rice
Posted by kongkong622 on April 22, 2008
I just got back from the Visayas Avenue branch of the NFA. Yes folks, I lined up for rice. At first I had hesitations after seeing the long lines over the weekend but my Mother-In-Law informed me that there were no lines on weekdays.
So immediately after lunch I piled the entire household into the car and drove to NFA.
True to form…there were no lines!! I had enough money to buy 2 sacks and I fully intended to keep on going back until I got those 2 sacks. Call it hoarding…call it panic buying….hey, my kids are big rice eaters so I wanted stock up for the rainy days. And by the way, it’s raining now so is that coincidence or is that coincidence.
I saw several luxury cars parked with their trunks overflowing with rice. There was even one passenger jeepney with enough rice to feed an army.
It took me 5 minutes to get my share. That’s 6 kilos per person. It costs Php110. When I saw that there were sacks upon sacks of rice I knew I could get my 2 cavans. However, the barker made an announcement that they would not take any 500 peso bills anymore due to some counterfeit bills they got yesterday. Bad!! I only had 3 hundred peso bills and the rest were 500. I had enough for 18 kilos so that’s all I got.
So here are some tips when buying your rice at the nearest NFA :
-
Bring loose change. (5 kilos costs Php91.25 and 6 kilos costs Php110)
-
Don’t bring a sack. Bring regular grocery bags.
-
Go on a weekday.
-
Go after lunch (all the restos and carinderias buy their share in the morning)
I’m thinking of going back tomorrow to get my fill.
And by the way…the rice is excellent. Rumor has it that it’s a Vietnamese variety.

so it’s confirmed, mahal pala talaga? gosh, buti na lang me katiting kaming lupa.. sabihin ko nga sa tatay ko na padalhan ako ng isang cavan dito lol.. when he was here kasi and saw the price i pay for 10 kilo rice, he told me na mas mahal pa daw yun kesa sa 50 kilo sack sa pinas.. padadalhan na lang daw ako dito hehe..

Hi Cess!! Yes, thats so true. I just checked with my Mom and she bought a cavan of rice for Php1900. That’s not the best pa. Using the prices of NFA, a cavan would only cost Php900!! Big savings!

Hi Chats!! I agree, you should go. Sa may Visayas lang, tapat ng DENR. Sabihan mo ko. Samahan kita

Hi Raquel!! The cheapest commercial variety is Php30. Not the best yun ha. Medyo durog. That’s why I didn’t hesitate anymore na pumila.
BTW, naka-isang cavan na kami. Hooray!!

Hi Analyse!! Yes, confirmed. Ang mahal na. Even if you buy one whole sack, mahal pa din. The price/kg of the cheapest variety is the price of milagrosa before.
Uyy sabihin mo kay Tatay, kami din padalhan nya..hehehe

at dahil sa issue na ito, kaya ngarag ako/kami sa office these days. hay naku, mukhang far pa from dwindling down ang issue.
I have a… rather nasty personal opinion about the issue, pero I’ll keep mum about it na lang. baka ma toks ako ng mga Bosses. heehee. kwento ko na lang sa yo when we meetup na ulit. kelan nga pala next dinner?

Ay, saan ba banda yan, Cookie, tapat ng DENR? Gusto ko din bumili sana. Makapunta nga minsan, busy kasi kami, aga alis kaya no time to do that.

Hi Feng!! It looks like the issue is really far from dying down. In fact, it’s been getting hotter as the days go by. Eto na nga, naki-ride na din ako kasi ang mahal na talaga bumili sa labas.
I’m very curious about what you have to say. Sige, let’s plan the next dinner na para we can exchange notes

Hi Julie!! It’s right across the DENR. You wont’ miss it because there are a lot of people milling about.
Ako din I had to sneak in some time to make pila. Nung day na pumila kami pag dating ko ng bahay, bihis agad ako kasi may meeting ako sa Makati some mining and provincial officials. O di ba

Good thinking Cookie. It’s so true, nakakagulat ang increase ng price ng rice.
Now that you said that the rice is excellent, I will check out the nearest NFA distribution center here.
Thanks!

i can’t believe that we have rice crisis in the Philippines. last time i went home (2007) the good quality rice only cost php1,000.
even though, we don’t have rice shortage here in the USA, i will practice half a cup of rice per meal to see if it is sufficient for me.
sa province namin (in Catanduanes), mahina daw ang harvest because of a month-long rain. what is the world coming to?

Tsk, grabe na talaga ang presyo at shortage ng rice. Dito sa amin, yung dating $11.99 for a 25 lbs $20.00 na!

This rice shortage is a travesty. Sigh.
